This might come across as harsh (it’s truly not meant that way) but the probability is that the thing stopping you, is you. As my business partner says “You need to get out of your own way”. Now there will seem to be a million and one reasons why this is. We are, after all, exceptionally good at making excuses to ourselves.

For example, let’s say you want earn more money? There are a plethora of comfortable and cosy excuses why we don’t take action.

  • If I wait it out someone will recognise my talent.
  • I just need to be more qualified.
  • I will apply for other roles tomorrow.
  • I am less suited to that promotion than others.
  • I’ve not got enough time to sink into it.
  • etc.

We are truly amazing at having a dream and then creating reasons why it’s unattainable.

In reality there are often only three things that are really stopping you.

Let’s take a closer look.

You are not ready to commit.

Sometimes it takes time and effort to make a change and sometimes we are simply not committed enough to do this. A good example of this is the drop off rate in gym attendance come February. Yes, we want to be fitter but are we really committed to it?

You have a fear of failure.

If you don’t try you can never fail. Oh, you can always never succeed. Darn. Accidental successes are rare and what you tend to find behind every successful person is a trail of failures that they’ve learned from. Failure is after all only a failure if you fail to learn from it.

You don’t know how to start.

Often our dreams are so big and beautiful that we simply don’t know where to start. The chasm between where we are now and where we want to be is simply too big so we don’t take that first step.
